Investigation of serious aviation incident at Trondheim airport Vaernes (ENVA)

On 15 February 2026 SE-RUO, an Airbus A320 was enroute to Tromso airport Langnes (ENTC) after taking off from Oslo airport Gardermoen (ENGM). The aircraft was operated by SAS. During flight a lithium-ion-battery overheated in a passengers carry-on luggage. The captain declared emergency and diverted to Trondheim airport Vaernes (ENVA). There were no injuries.

SE-RUO was enroute Tromso as SK4416. There were 180 pax and a crew of 6 onboard. North of Trondheim the crew became aware of smoke in the rear of the cabin. It came from one of the passengers carry-on luggage under the seat. The bag contained cellular phone, batteries and a powerbank. The passenger also had a PC. Powerbank and PC were put in water. A warm battery had melted a hole in the bag and made burn marks on the carpet. The cabincrew used a fire extinguisher on the bag and the battery before it all was put in water. The captain declared emergency and turned towards Vaernes for landing. The cabincrew had to deal with heavy protests from the owner of the luggage. The items put in water cooled down at firste, but then startet to create heate again. The bag and its content was handed over to fire fighters after landing.
