Investigation of aviation accident at Kjeller airport

LN-BDM was conducting a local flight in the Oslo area with two persons on board. During the return to Kjeller, the pilot experienced difficulties maintaining directional control on approach due to crosswind. When the aircraft had descended to a low height on final approach, the pilot assessed that directional control was no longer satisfactory and decided to initiate a go-around. However, during the go-around attempt, the aircraft did not have sufficient energy to arrest the rate of descent and struck the ground in an area outside the prepared grass strip. Following ground contact, the aircraft pitched onto its nose, flipped over, and came to rest upside down. The pilot and passenger remained suspended in their safety harnesses until they were assisted out of the aircraft by people at the scene. Emergency services responded and examined the occupants. Neither of the persons on board sustained any injuries.

The investigation will clarify the sequence of events and the contributing factors to the incident. Based on this, the NSIA will assess areas for improving safety.

It is not the NSIA’s task to apportion blame or liability under criminal or civil law. The purpose of the investigation is solely to contribute to learning and the prevention of serious incidents and accidents.
