Investigation of a serious incident on approach to Svolvær airport
On Thursday 22 December 2022 the crew of a flight inbound for Svolvær airport (ENSH) received a pull-up warning from the Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) during approach to runway 01. Uncorrected QNH setting resulted in the plane flying 700 feet lower than the indicated barometric altitude. The aircraft returned to Bodø lufthavn (ENBO) where a normal landing was performed.
The investigation has focused on the barriers implemented by Widerøe to ensure the local air pressure (QNH) is set on the airplane's barometric altimeters. The investigation has also focused on technical solutions that could act as a barrier to prevent misset QNH.
Lastly the investigation has reviewed the robustness of the EGPWS as a barrier to prevent misset QNH.
Status of investigation
The investigation is ongoing.
