Aviation report 1976/06

D-EGVO was to fly from Kiruna to Alta. The flight had been postponed a couple of days due to weather. South of Alta the aircraft has entered clouds and most likely epxperienced carburettor icing accompanied by loss of control.

D-EGVO and another german aircraft was on a holiday in Norway. The aircraft had landed in Kiruna 10 June. The planned flight to Alta was postponed due to the weather. On Friday 13 June the weater was deemed good enough to perform the flight, with landing in Alta planed for 1640 hrs. There were some rain showers and low clouds between Kiruna and Alta. Outside of the clouds there was light rain and good visibility.

At 1559 hrs D-EGVO reported over the radio that they had entered clouds. The pilot then requested a QDM to Alta. After this there were more radio traffic that D-EGVO was still in clouds. The air traffic control in Alta asked D-EGVO to climb to 3000 ft to be able to give a QDM. The pilot reported that they were at 3000 ft at 1608 hrs. Two minutes later they reported that they had problems. They confirmed a QDM at 1611 hrs and this was the last time anyone was in contact with D-EGVO

By flying in clouds at 3000 ft the pilot entered weather conditions were there was a high risk of carburettor icing. The propeller was found without damage and showed no sign of rotation when the aircraft impacted the ground. The accident investigation board sees it as likley that the pilot has entered clouds, experienced carburettor icing with a loss of engine power and then loss of control.
