Investigation of a serious military incident at Rena military training area, Åmot municipality
On 5 December 2023 a soldier was injured while throwing a hand grenade with spontaneous smoke. The Norwegian Safety Investigation Authority (NSIA) has launched a safety investigation into the incident.
The soldier was employed by the Armed Forces and belonged to the military police (MP). The accident occurred when the person concerned participated as a marker in an exercise organized by His Majesty's Royal Guard (HMKG).
The grenade went off in front of the soldier's face while throwing the grenade. The soldier was wearing safety glasses, and immediately removed the personal equipment that was covered in smoke from the grenade and was evacuated.
The investigation will clarify the sequence of events, identify safety problems and map contributing causal factors to the incident. The investigation will also review previous similar incidents. Based on this, the NSIA will investigate areas for improving safety.
