Investigation of a railway accident at Arna station, on the Bergen line
On Friday 22 March 2024 at approximately 1912, a freight train from OnRail AS passed a stop signal at Arna station at a stop, and was thus led into a dead end track and derailed. The incident caused extensive damage to the freight train and the infrastructure at the station.
The locomotive overturned at the entrance to the tunnel between Arna station and Trengereid, and the driver suffered minor injuries. A passenger train in the opposite direction stopped inside the tunnel, before reaching the main signal, approximately 1 km from the freight train. Prior to the incident, an emergency call was made, and the investigation will clarify the circumstances around this and why the train did not stop as expected. Any underlying conditions that may have contributed to the accident occurring will also be clarified and analysed.
The purpose of the safety investigation is to contribute with learning, which can be used in the work to improve safety within the railway sector.
