Investigation of an accident with a charter RIB in Olden, Stryn municipality, Norway

On 22 July 2015 in Olden, Stryn municipality, Norway, an accident occured with a charter RIB causing three persons to fall overboard. Two was rescued, one person died.

A local charter RIB had taken 9 passengers onboard from a visiting cruiseship, docked in Olden, in order to make a 45 minutes sightseeing trip.

The accident occured shorthly after departure, when the RIB increased speed and made a sharp turn. Two passenger and the driver ended up in the sea approx. 2-300 meters from shore.

One of the passengers in the water, made it to shore, the other one was rescued by boats that came to.

The driver off the RIB sank, but was recovered shortly after and received first aid before being transported by helicopter to hospital where death was prononced the following day.

The Accident Investigation board Norway (AIBN) launched an investigation and travelled to Olden 26 July, to collect facts and conduct with the involved parties.

Further the AIBN will establish a sequence of events in order to find contributing factors.
