Aviation report 2014/02
En route from Rakkestad (ENRK) to Kvernberget (ENKB), after passing Kjeller (ENKJ), the commander registered problems with the engine and loss of oil pressure. He attempted to return to Kjeller, but the engine seized, and he had to perform an emergency landing in a field just short of the airfield. The landing was made with the landing gear retracted. There was substantial damage to the aeroplane. The commander, who was alone on board, escaped injury.
The engine seizure occurred because practically all oil was lost in-flight. The SHT has despite thorough technical examinations not been able to determine how the engine oil was lost. Normally, it is not probable that such a great amount of oil is ventilated through the crancase breather line. In spite of this, loss of all the engine oil through the crankcase ventilation seems to be the only possibility in this case.
This report is in Norwegian only. No safety recommendation is issued in connection with this investigation.
