Investigation into aviation incident at Haukeland University Hospital with Leonardo Helicopters AW101
The incident occurred during start-up at Haukeland University Hospital on 28 February 2026. No one was injured, but material damage occurred when the main rotor unexpectedly started rotating when engine number 1 was started.
Based on initial information, it appears that the actuator that determines what engine number 1 should drive has not been in either end-stop position but somewhere in between. Engine number 1 can either drive the main gearbox, and therefore also the main rotor, or the accessory gearbox. During start-up, the actuator should normally be set so that the accessory gearbox is driven.
The NSIA has opened an investigation to clarify what happened and identify contributing factors. The investigation will also assess areas for improving safety.
