Investigation of a road traffic accident in Sør-Varanger municipality
The Norwegian Safety Investigation Authority (NSIA) has launched a safety investigation into the head-on collision between two passenger cars on 21 July 2026, one of which was being operated in service for the Norwegian Armed Forces. The accident occurred on County Road 8850 in Pasvik, Sør-Varanger Municipality. The driver of one of the vehicles was killed in the accident.
On Tuesday 21 July 2026, a head-on collision occurred between two passenger cars on County Road 8850 in Pasvik, Sør-Varanger Municipality. The northbound vehicle was occupied solely by the driver, who died as a result of the accident. The other vehicle, which was being operated in service for the Norwegian Armed Forces, was occupied by a driver and a passenger, both of whom sustained minor injuries.
The investigation will seek to establish the sequence of events and identify contributing factors. Based on these findings, the Norwegian Safety Investigation Authority will assess areas where safety improvements may be necessary.
It is not the NSIA’s task to apportion blame or liability under criminal or civil law. The purpose of the investigation is solely to contribute to learning and the prevention of serious incidents and accidents.
