Investigation into a Serious Incident During Live-Fire Training at Blåtind Firing and Training Range in Målselv Municipality

The Norwegian Safety Investigation Authority (NSIA) has launched a safety investigation following an incident in which a civilian vehicle entered the target area during an ongoing live-fire exercise at the Blåtind Firing and Training Range in Målselv Municipality on 24 September 2026. No persons were injured in the incident.

During a live-fire exercise at the Blåtind Firing and Training Range, a military unit conducted firing with a vehicle-mounted weapon system on a CV90 combat vehicle against pop-up targets within the training area. After the order to open fire had been given, and one of the participating CV90 vehicles had engaged the targets, a civilian vehicle was observed within the area. An immediate order to cease fire was issued.

The investigation will establish the sequence of events and identify the factors that contributed to the incident. Based on these findings, the NSIA will assess areas for improving safety. It is not the role of the NSIA to determine civil or criminal liability. The sole purpose of the investigation is to contribute to learning and the prevention of serious incidents and accidents.
