Investigation of aviation accident at Seterfjellet, Alta municipality
On Monday 20 May 2024, a helicopter, a Robinson R44 Raven II, LN-OBN, crashed when performing a ferry flight to Kjeller airport for annual inspection.
The helicopter departed from Elvestrand nearby Alta on Monday 20 May at 12:33 p.m. The pilot was supposed to move the helicopter to Kjeller airport for annual inspection. There were two persons on board, and the leg of the flight was planned for Leknes airport.
After approximately 15 minutes of flight, when the helicopter approached Seterfjellet south of Alta, the visibility became so poor that the pilot chose to turn around. The pilot turned around in the valley south-east of Seterfjellet and has explained that he encountered turbulent weather with gusty winds. The pilot has explained that, shortly after the helicopter had turned, they had low ground speed and encountered a strong headwind. He perceived that they were thrown backwards. The helicopter probably hit the ground with the tail first. After the helicopter had stopped it came to rest on its right side with extensive damage. There was a fuel leak but no fire. Both persons survived but was chilled when they were picked up by the rescue service.
The NSIA has carried out an on-site investigation in addition to an inspection of the fuel tanks.
The fuel tank inspection reveals that the helicopter's fuel rubber tank was punctured. The NSIA’s current assessment is that the crash-protected fuel tanks may have contributed to the fact that there was no fire in the accident.
