Investigation of aviation accident at Maarud farm in Sør-Odal
About. at 1830 on Monday 24 June, a small airplane, a Piper Cub J-3C with registration LN-SAI, crashed during landing at Maarud farm after the left main wheel had fallen off in the landing circuit.
LN-SAI was practising landings at Maarud farm with instructor and student on board. They had already flown three landing patterns and taken a break on the ground and were flying a new set of landing patterns when the accident occurred. On the last landing, before they were to set course for Kjeller, the accident happened. As the plane touched down, they noticed that it braked violently before flipping onto its nose before it came to a stop. Then the airplane fell back and was left standing in an upright position. Both pilots were uninjured and got out of the plane. They were then able to determine that the left main wheel was missing. There was also some damage to the aircraft. A search was made for the missing wheel both on the runway and in the surrounding areas without success.
The Norwegian Safety Investigation Authority was at the scene with two accident investigators the following day to carry out on-site investgations. A drone was used to search for the wheel but it was not located. The NSIA has decided to carry out a limited safety investigation following the accident.
