Railway report 2013/09

The Accident Investigation Board Norway (AIBN) has published a study of Norwegian SPAD incidents from 1th January 2010 to 1th June 2012.

This work is a continuation of the previous report covering the years 2002-2008 (JB rapport 2009/09). The report is based on information from 170 SPAD incidents gathered through a questionnaire. The analysis indicates that the contributing factors to a SPAD incident are complex, and no one stands out as the “key factor”. AIBN finds it very interesting that many of the factors traditionally associated with SPAD are not found in this material. One of the main findings is that less experienced drives are more frequently represented in these SPAD reports than more experienced drivers. According to this, one should seek effective methods for transferring knowledge gained from experience, to less experienced drivers.

This report is in Norwegian only. English summary is included. No safety recommendation is issued in connection with this investigation.
