Investigation of a railway accident by Finneidfjord north of Bjerka station on the Nordlandsbanen line
On Thursday 24 October 2024 at approximately 1415, a passenger train from SJ Norge AS collided with a rockslide between Bjerka and Mo i Rana. The locomotive driver died in the accident, and five passengers suffered minor injuries.
The train derailed to the left at approx. km 472 after hitting the rockslide. The train continued down towards the main road E6 and the locomotive overturned in the derailment. The train consisted of a DI4 locomotive and five passenger carriages of the type B5.
In 2016, the NSIA investigated a similar railway accident in the same area.
The investigation will clarify the sequence of events and point to possible causal relationships. Any underlying circumstances that may have contributed to the incident will be clarified and analysed.
The purpose of the investigation is to contribute with learning that can be used in the work to improve safety.
