Investgation of ropeway accident in Surnadal Alpine Centre

On Monday 17 March 2025, a child got stuck in a ski lift at Surnadal Alpine Center. The child was participating in a ski race and at some point the ski lift got caught in the starting number, preventing the child from getting free. The accident was discovered when the safety rope at the top of the ski lift broke and the lift stopped. The child was found lying face down in the snow.

Life-saving first aid was quickly initiated and the child was transported by air ambulance helicopter for treatment at a hospital.

The NSIA investigation will map the sequence of events and the circumstances surrounding the accident. Factors that may have contributed to the accident will be identified and analysed. The purpose of the investigation is to contribute with safety learning to the alpine industry that can be used in the work to improve the safety in ski lifts.
