Investigation of very serious marine casualty, foundering west of Karmøy in Norway
The Norwegian Safety Investigation Authority (NSIA) has decided to investigate the very serious marine casuality on 15 February 2024 with the workboat Maya which capsized and sunk west of Karmøy with five people on board.
The accident occurred when the vessel was towing a water pipe with a lenght of more than 300 meters. During the towing process, the tow broke twice and when attempting to reattach the pipe for the second time, they discovered water ingress in one of the vessel's two hulls. All five on board were evacuated to another vessel that was nearby.
The NSIA has conducted interviews with the crew.
