Report on marine accident involving the fishing vessel Klævtind 1, LJKH, which foundered outside Bleik, Andøya on 9 January 2023

Marine report 2023/02

The fishing vessel Klævtind 1 was set on autopilot and maintained a speed of 1–2 knots. The course was set to bring the vessel under the shelter of the rock formation on Andøya in Nordland. After approx. one and a half hour Klævtind 1 grounded on a reef. An attempt was made to tow the vessel, but the tow had to be interrupted and Klævtind 1 sank. All six on board were rescued.

The skipper's local knowledge and the fact that for him this was routine work and a normal working day, led him to be inattentive to the vessel's position in the waters. This in turn led to the vessel sailing too far on the set course and run a ground.

Everyday repetitive work tasks can lead to potentially dangerous situations being overlooked more easily, because everything in the situation is perceived as normal.

Understanding of the normalisation of routine work, such as navigating in familiar waters, can contribute to increased awareness and increased safety. In this case, local control mechanisms should have been found which could contribute to the necessary attention to navigation when the vessel is in motion.

Good control of rescue equipment contributed to an increased chance of survival.

This report is in Norwegian only. No safety recommendation is issued in connection with this investigation.
