The Norwegian Safety Investigation Authority (NSIA) has initiated a safety investigation into the head-on collision on 15 May 2026 between a passenger car and a bus on the E18 road at Nordstrand in the municipality of Oslo. The driver of the passenger car died in the accident.
On the afternoon of Friday, 15 May 2026, a frontal collision occurred between a passenger car and a bus on the E18 road at Nordstrand in the municipality of Oslo. In the passenger car, which was traveling northbound toward Oslo, there were three people; the driver died, and the two passengers on board were seriously injured.
On board the bus, which was traveling southbound, there were around forty passengers. The bus climbed onto the roadside concret guardrail along the roadway and came to rest at an angle in its final position after the accident. Both the bus driver and the passengers sustained minor physical injuries.
The NSIA has recently published the thematic report ‘Thematic report of frontal collisions involving buses: active and passive safety'. The investigation will be seen in connection with this report, with the aim of clarifying the sequence of events, identifying safety challenges and mapping contributing causal factors. Based on this, the NSIA will assess areas for improving safety.
It is not the NSIA’s task to apportion blame or liability under criminal or civil law. The purpose of the investigation is solely to learning and the prevention of serious incidents and accidents.
