Investigation of foundering of a fishing vessel in the Varangerfjord
The NSIA has decided to investigate the accident involving the fishing vessel Amalie Sofie LG4901. On 5 August 2025, the fishing vessel was out trawling for shrimps when the it listed, capsized and subsequently foundered.
An emergency beacon was activated when the vessel sank, initiating a rescue operation to locate the fishing vessel and its crew.
There were three people on board. Two people survived, while one person has died.
The investigation will clarify the sequence of events and the contributing factors to the accident. Based on this, the NSIA will assess areas for improving safety.
It is not the NSIA’s task to apportion blame or liability under criminal or civil law. The purpose of the investigation is solely to contribute to learning and the prevention of serious incidents and accidents.
